Unless the Sony–Network18 merger can take place, in which case two relatively weak channels (of which Sony Max still has a huge South library, while Colors Cineplex is worth nothing) can come together and present a stronger challenge to the two bigger players. How likely do you see this happening?

Even if merger happens where will they get movies from? Almost all major, minor players signed on with zee or star. Sony, Viacom r already losing so many movie rights. Sony is just getting Firoz Nadiadwala films shortly. Well even in dubbed genre, Star and Zee r grabbing major share. Sony, Network18 lost out in building strong bollywood library and relied just on dubbed content, result is even producers having pact ended deal bcoz of not getting adequate visibility on their chs

Just regularly checking movie schedule on star network chs and getting happy more n more, they r acquiring so many movies from various distributors / producers. So from classic to 80s, 90s to latest, star is set to have biggest library and each channel will fully utilize it. By the way even bollywood n dubbed stuff from goldmines telefilms is becoming more prominent so question arises what will Sony do, it will hardly have anything and become worse than colors cineplex.
Goldmines has a prominent old stuff which has airings on Max 2.

Atleast Sony is realizing it's folly and bucking up but Viacom's a lost cause

In the current scenario it will be fair to compare Hindi movie channels to telecom companies as follows:

Disney/Star: Jio. The current leader by miles. After Star was acquired by Disney the UTV channels, which were very niche initially, have benefited tremendously. Both Disney and Jio are marked by a meteoric rise especially since the deal between YRF and Star.

Zee: Airtel. It is a longtime player and facing challenges from the new leader. Both Zee and Airtel were the leaders in respective market shares until Star and Jio emerged, respectively. Even though Star is also an old player it was not as aggressive until 2019.

Sony: Vodafone. Another old player but completely losing the plot. While Sony is barely able to pick up a few films here and there, Vodafone is feared to go into bankruptcy. Both desperately need a LOT of relief in order to escape a certain death.

Viacom18: Aircel. It has stuck around for some time but it cannot be propped up any more by Johar, Bhansali and Andhadhun which are worth almost nothing anyway. It is sure to die a painful death like Aircel which simply gave up and closed.
