Star India and Viacom18 have acquired licences from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) to launch Hindi movie channels.

While Star has procured a licence to launch Star Gold Romance, Viacom18 will use the licence to launch Rishtey Cineplex. Star India has so far not revealed plans to launch a new Hindi movie channel.

However, the company had recently won a slot on Doordarshan’s free DTH platform Freedish for Star Gold Romance.

According to industry sources, the new channel is most likely to be a free-to-air (FTA) channel. Star currently owns and operates two pay Hindi movie channels, namely Star Gold and Movies OK.

Star India’s Hindi film library is in excess of 1,200 titles. Star has an FTA Hindi entertainment channel in Star Utsav, which is also available on Freedish.

Viacom18 had recently announced plans to launch a Hindi movie channel under the Rishtey brand.

The channel is slated to launch in the first quarter of the next fiscal. The new channel will fill a crucial gap in the network’s portfolio.

Unlike any other genre, the Hindi movie genre has a long tail of channels catering to different audience sets and markets.

The three big players are Star India, ZEEL and Sony Pictures Networks.

The entry of Viacom18 will make it a four-player market. Disney India also owns and operates movie channels UTV Movies and UTV Action.
