Correction: NTO pushed away customers to OTT platforms.

No. This is wrong assessment . Wrong pricing strategy of broadcasters made people to shift towards DD Free Dish and OTT platforms in a very rapid manner

Bcoz premium customers have made a shift to OTT while bcoz of flawed pricing of channels regular subscribers r opting for less channels or moving to DD Free Dish
There more customers using both paytv and ott and paying more... Because they added ott with dth... Which means they are willing to pay more.. If they find good content with good service...
Bro, ott is not premium as we think... Our most leading ott apps don't have proper UI, stable software... Which irritates end user.... Whereas in dth the set top box UI is stable....
Whatever it is regulating pricing is not good... Government can impose rules...

Correct assessment. Why would I pay ₹22.40 for TV channels when I can stream earlier on TV and as per my convenience? On top of that ₹250 - ₹300 got me pretty much covered on month's entertainment on my TV. Now I have to sit with pen and paper to decide which channels I want and which I don't to save cost. TV has become inconvenient and expensive to watch. Unless I go for some other useless channels in the name of bouquet. I am forced to pay more.

Buddy , this is what i said broadcasters need to provide good content at affordable price be it thru standalone or bouquet mode. Same is not happening right now. They need to come up with good content, draw a clear strategy what should be the revenue model for channels across genres and give choice to subscribers to opt for them via any mode. People r willing to consume content on both OTT and Linear TV mode but there needs to a well defined strategy to attract viewers towards the same and continue with them. Freemium and Premium both models will continue on OTT while on TV there will continue to be good demand for FTA and pay tv channels.

Largely still TV remains to be the clear dominant platform for larger public to watch content as internet penetration is still rather low or not so good in many parts of the country. Even if mobile internet is available then viewing on small screen remains limited to individual phones , that too would be not that high when it comes to watching regular content. Also charges for internet and subscription to OTT packs still is quite costly. Hybrid TV + OTT system is still more prevalent in urban areas where people have internet connection, smart boxes/TV and paid subscription of OTT platforms.

I have already stated that broadcasters can even attract OTT audience towards them if TV Channels offer good curated content at affordable price. Definitely watching content on OTT does have some disadvantages.... Hassle of managing many apps, switching between them, searching for content and paying more r just some of them while TV offers lot of convenience and better overall experience hence if broadcasters leverage the potential of both these platforms properly then on both fronts it can yield success as both can compliment each other. In future we will see more adoption of bundled TV+OTT packs from broadcasters itself giving various benefits to viewers on both platforms at discounted pricing, also something like if one subscribes to a channel on linear tv then getting complimentary or discounted access to same content on OTT platforms or vice versa will gain momentum

The traditional TV viewing is loosing it's relevance day by day. That's why the DPOs and MSOs are finding newer ways to keep the show on.
A simple calculation -
Suppose I want 4 channels from Star Group for an year and I watch them continuously without dropping.
1. SS1 HIndi HD - 22x12 = 264
2. SS2 HD - 22x12 = 264
3. SS Select 1 HD - 22x12 = 264
4. Star Jalsha HD - 22x12 = 264

Total cost is 1056 a year with numerous ads in between programmes and now ads on Volume bar/LCN box.

Hotstar ad-free subscription is around 1100 for the super tier if I recall correctly.
Where I can watch all star contents all year, from all channels. With a few caveats like low FPS sports event.
The only things that could save linear television for foreseeable future are-
1. Less number of channels and quality content.
2. Audio feeds are enough, no need to come up with another channel every next year.
3. Cost reduction from Broadcasters end and pass the benefits to customers.

This is what i said TV channel pricing of broadcasters need correction. High pricing is not an outcome of NTO but rather a call taken by broadcasters out of their own free will. Also even if channels r available at affordable price still the argument of getting access to content on OTT and hence not opting for channels on TV does not hold ground.... People take a decision to opt for channels , OTT or combination of both based on various factors. Ofcourse there will be overlapping of content but OTT will give option to stream the content as per convenience and give access to lot more content than what is available on TV. Also TV is not meant for individual viewing hence in most homes subscription to channels will depend upon what a family watches while individual people can opt for OTT to watch content of their choice

As such OTT still is restricted to a very minute viewer base and same will continue to be the case for next 5 or 6 years when both TV and OTT will reach true competitive levels as far as subscription / viewership is concerned. Right now flawed pricing strategy of TV Channels has accelerated shift towards OTT but still it is quite less when compared to shift to regular viewers to dD Free Dish.

Right now NTO rules provide u the option to choose favourite channels of ur choice without any lock in period. So there is convenience and flexibility which was not the case in Pre NTO days. Also thanks to NTO rules, standalone prices have somewhat come down from what used to be earlier.

How has it become inconvenient for u now as u were earlier too opting for discounted DPO bouquet or packs and still can do the same? Earlier in pre NTO days a-la-carte channel prices were super inflated, Now they cost lot less and u have better options to customize ur channel subscription as per ur liking thru DPO bouquet, broadcasters bouquet, a-la-carte mode with option to add / drop anytime. If broadcasters make corrections to their pricing strategy u will see the immense benefits NTO rules offer to viewers
