The traditional TV viewing is loosing it's relevance day by day. That's why the DPOs and MSOs are finding newer ways to keep the show on.
A simple calculation -
Suppose I want 4 channels from Star Group for an year and I watch them continuously without dropping.
1. SS1 HIndi HD - 22x12 = 264
2. SS2 HD - 22x12 = 264
3. SS Select 1 HD - 22x12 = 264
4. Star Jalsha HD - 22x12 = 264
Total cost is 1056 a year with numerous ads in between programmes and now ads on Volume bar/LCN box.
Hotstar ad-free subscription is around 1100 for the super tier if I recall correctly.
Where I can watch all star contents all year, from all channels. With a few caveats like low FPS sports event.
The only things that could save linear television for foreseeable future are-
1. Less nber of channels and quality content.
2. Audio feeds are enough, no need to come up with another channel every next year.
3. Cost reduction from Broadcasters end and pass the benefits to customers.
Traditional Linear TV is not losing any relevance and will continue to hold strong for next 5 to 10 years. OTT is largely an urban phenomenon as of now
No one will opt for some a-la-carte channels all thru the year, people will keep subscribing / unsubscribing different channels. Ofcourse standalone channels will cost little more than price of channel when it is offered in bouquet but choice should be left to viewers and standalone prices should not be artificially inflated to encourage people to opt for bouquet. Broadcasters should simply offer good content at affordable price to viewers and earn thru subscription + ad revenue mix whose ratio will differ for various channels.
Even if tomorrow OTT and internet access gain momentum in most parts of the country still TV as a medium holds many advantages and will continue to prosper if broadcasters adopt right strategy.
Separate new regional sports channels r needed for key markets, audio feeds r not suitable/viable bcoz of variety of factors
Also more channels should be there but content should be compelling. Also both FTA and Pay TV audience need to be catered to properly by broadcasters with effort to attract more of FTA audience towards Pay TV Platforms in a gradual manner. Thinking that dropping GEC o Movie Channels from DD Free Dish will lead to FTA audience shifting towards Pay TV Platforms or help in lowering subscriber churn on Pay TV platforms us again example of flawed strategy which results in no positive outcome rather it has adverse effects.
If broadcasters still do not correct pricing of their channels be it thru bouquet or a-la-carte mode of if tomorrow bouquet price discount cap d and a-la-carte channel price ceiling gets removed and they think that adopting to older system of pricing will bring back viewers to deliver success then sorry but it will further lead to reduction in number of people showing interest to subscribe channels on Pay TV platforms
