Review : Patas – Masala Entertainer

.

Starring:Nandamuri Kalyan Ram, Shruti Sodhi
Nandamuri Kalyan Ram has been looking for a hit from quite some time now. He is back with his latest presentation Patas, which is directed by debutante Anil Ravipudi. This action entertainer which also stars Shruthi Sodhi as the female lead has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Story:-
Kalyan Sinha(Kalyan Ram) is a corrupt police officer who gets himself transferred to Hyderabad. Once he lands there, he misuses his power and starts minting money. During this process, he also encourages a local politician(Ashutosh Rana) who has become a huge headache to the DGP(Sai Kumar) of Hyderabad.

Twist in the tale arises when the DGP comes to know that there is a shocking truth behind Kalyan Sinha’s arrival to Hyderabad. What is that truth ? Why did Kalyan Sinha become a corrupt officer ? To know answers to these questions, you need to watch the film on the big screen.

Plus Points:-
Major plus point of the film is the heavy dose of entertainment. Credit should completely go to director Anil Ravipudi for creating an energetic character for Kalyan Ram, and also adding decent amounts of comedy right throughout the film. Not once during the entire film tempo drops and excitement continues right till the end. Even though story of this film is routine, the way it has been narrated is amazing.

This is probably Kalyan Ram’s career best role and he excels in his character. As showcased in the trailers, he is quite energetic and showcases decent acting skills in all his powerful scenes. The hard work that he has put in, be it for his dances or his fights, everything shows on screen. Heroine Shruthi Sodhi is a decent find and looks good on screen. Balakrishna’s remix song has been shot exceptionally well, and is one of the highlights of the second half.

Comedian Srinivasa Reddy is the highlight in the comedy department. His role as Kalyan Ram’s sidekick is efficient as he provides decent comedy right throughout the first half. All his scenes with Kalyan have also come out well. Ashutosh Rana and Sai Kumar do their respective roles well. The late M S Narayana once again entertains us as Shining Star Subhash. While the first half has hilarious entertainment, second half has high voltage confrontation episodes.

Minus Points:-
As said earlier, story of this film is quite stale and old. There is nothing much going story wise and the plot is also predictable. Heroine Shruthi Sodhi has nothing much to do in the film and comes only during the songs. Certain logics regarding the police department go missing in the film. A few fights could have been trimmed to cut short the run time.

→ Beeruva Movie Review

Story: The film narrates the story of a youngster, who loves his almirah and what he does to achieve his goals in life.

Movie Review: All he loves is an almirah! He discovers right from his childhood that it is the safest place to hide. And if one more name could be added to the cast of the film, you could safely add an almirah for the role it plays in the movie.

Sanju (Sundeep Kishan) has an MBA degree to boast of, but he is not interested in joining his father's business. His father Suryanarayana (Naresh) tries to put his son on track, and that changes Sanju's mission in life. He wants to get that girl who walks into a room, asks him to draw the curtain, and stuns him completely.
Swathi (Surbhi) is furious when she gets to know Sanju's true identity. But Sanju has lost his heart to her. It's no joke getting any close to her because her father Adikeshavulu (Mukesh Rishi) is a powerful man, a murderer who runs an underground empire, even controlling politics. Imagine Sanju landing in Adikeshavulu's house! He does it. What takes him there is another story in itself. Suryanarayana is shell-shocked when his son tells him on the return that he is in love with the don's daughter. The father is flabbergasted. That's not all. Sanju opens the car boot and lo! What Suryanarayana finds there gives him the jitters! Sanju does the unthinkable all the time. If hiding in the almirah was what he did to escape punishment from his father as a child, it is the almirah, once again, that play a crucial role in him reach the goal of his life.

Beeruvais quite an entertainer, largely because of a well-scripted characterization for Sundeep Kishan's role. However, the scenes where Sanju taps on his father's head while they drive to Adikeshavulu's are not in good taste.

Surbhi is good in her role but she could have worked better in the scene where she gets to drink bang during Holi. All in all, Sundeep Kishanand Saptagiri, who's got a fun role in the movie, make the film a treat to watch. There are surprises galore in the movie and it may just spoil the fun for you, if those are mentioned here

Review : ‘I’ – Misses the Target

Starring:Vikram, Amy Jackson
Shankar is one film maker in India whose films are eagerly awaited all over. His latest presentation is ‘I’ which has the National Award winning actor Vikram in a lead role. After all the hype and hysteria, this film has finally hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Story:-
Lingesh(Vikram) is an upcoming body builder who is deeply and madly in love with an actress named Diya(Amy Jackson). One fine day, Diya approaches him to act in an Ad film with her. She gives him the necessary make over, and in the process of the shoot, the couple fall in love with each other.

Twist in the tale arises when Diya’s professional enemies run down a deadly virus into Lingesh’s body which turns his life upside down. Rest of the story is as to how an diseased Lingesh takes revenge on those who made his life a living hell.

Plus Points:-
Vikram is undoubtedly one of the biggest assets of the film. The efforts that he has put in for his role are clearly visible on screen. He is outstanding as a body builder, and pushes the edge with his appearance and acting as the hunchback guy. The way he has showcased pain and grief even with his heavy make up is just wonderful.

Amy Jackson is apt in her role and looks gorgeous. Visuals are top notch and the entire credit should definitely go to Shankar for thinking something different and in a grand scale. All the songs have been shot well and production values are superb.
Make up done for Vikram is of international standard and elevates his character to another level. While the first half has decent entertainment, the second half is serious and emotional. Upen Patel does well in his negative role, and so are Santhanam and Suresh Gopi.

Minus Points:-
Too much of hype and expectations spoil the outcome of this film. Shankar has raised the bar so high with his previous films but sadly, I fails to meet those expectations. No where in the film you get a feel that it is a Shankar film. He adds unnecessary elements and drags the film in many places.

Last fifteen minutes of the first half are below par, and the love story showcased during this part is quite boring. The film moves back and forth in time, and the screenplay takes a severe beating here. May be for the first time in his career, Shankar has misplaced songs in the narrative.
Yet another major drawback is the excessive length of the film. A lot of scenes and fights could have easily been trimmed. Once the twist is revealed in the second half, the movie gets predictable.

Technical Aspects:-
‘I’ is a brilliant film technically. A R Rahman’s music is good and so is the background score. As said earlier, the make up and prosthetics used for Vikram’s character are mind blowing. P C Sreeram’s camerawork is stunning and gives the film an international look. All the episodes that are shot in China have been shot beautifully.
The sets designed and scale of the movie is surely up to Shankar’s standard. Telugu dubbing is decent and so are the dialogues. Screenplay by Shanakar lacks focus in many areas as you do not get attached to film emotionally. The way Vikram’s character goes about taking revenge on his enemies in the first half have been hurried up and is unclear.

Verdict:-
On the whole, ‘I’ is surely Shankar’s weakest film till date. Excessive length, weak story and lack of emotional connect are basic drawbacks. But keeping the festival season in mind, Shankar’s grand visuals added with Vikram and Amy Jackson’s mind blowing performance, this film can be given a shot. Only thing you need to do is go in without any expectations whatsoever.

→ Gopala Gopala Review

Story
Gopala Rao (Venkatesh) is an atheist who owns a shop that sells Hindu idols in Koti area. His shop is rubbled due to an earthquake. When he claims the insurance, it’s rejected as earthquake is an ‘act of God’. Gopala Rao decides to sue god for the damage he has done. In the process, he involves Godmen and various trusts that make money using God’s image. It irks a popular baba (Mithun Chakraborthy). Gopala Rao gets physically intimidated once his petition is accepted by the court. Rest of the story is all about how Lord Krishna (Pawan Kalyan) saves and powers Gopala Rao towards victory.
Artists Performance
Actors:It’s a sleep walk forVenkateshto do roles of a struggling middle class man. He brings all his experience to make impact in vital scenes.Pawan Kalyanbrings it on with his godly image and subdued yet powerful performance.Pawan Kalyan’s sarane presence and sharp wit has suited the characterization of Lord Krishna.Shriyais alright as wife of Venkatesh.Anisha Ambrose(Gabbar Singh 2 heroine) did a cameo of an interviewer and she is pretty. ForMithun Chakraborthyit’s the same role he has done in Hindi and he excels.Posani Krishna Muraliis entertaining as a banana-eating fake baba.Diksha Panthis gorgeous as in the role of matha.Vennela Kishorehas played the role of the insurance officer andMadhu Shalinidonned the role of a TV journo.
Technical departments
Story - screenplay - direction:The basic story of the film is inspired by an Australian film titled ‘The Man Who Sued God’ (2001). An Indian theater play with titled ‘Kishan vs Kanhaiya’ enacted by Paresh Rawal has become popular. It was the success of Kishan vs Kanhaiya that prompted the Hindi blockbuster ‘Oh My God’ (2012) which also sports Paresh Rawal. Director Kishore Kumar Pardasany had a big task on his hands when he roped in Pawan Kalyan to play God. The original has a minimal role for Akshay Kumar who played the God. Kishore has increased the scenes for Pawan Kalyan and made sure that Pawan is presented really well. It’s a true remake for 90% of the movie. The episodes in which Pawan Kalyan hands over Bhagawadgeeta to Venkatesh are well conceived. Also the courtroom scene where validity of Bhagawadgeeta answered is also good. The Pawan Kalyan - Dhanraj single scene is very entertaining. The characterization of Venkatesh is sugar coated unlike raw and realistic characterization of Paresh Rawal in original. The climax of the film is prolonged just like original. The screenplay is sluggish.
Other departments:Songs scored byAnup Rubensare different from the work he has done earlier. Background music is fine. Cinematography byJayanan Vincentis good. Dialogues bySai Madhav Burraare nice. There are nicely written dialogues for Pawan Kalyan which suited his newly-acquired political image like “Samardhulu intlo vundipothe asamardhulu rajyamelutharu and nayukudu ante geliche vaadu kaadhu gelipinche vaadu’. Editing is alright. It’s a brave decision for the producers to remake this film in Telugu and getting two stars to play leads in such a different film is a master stroke.
Analysis:Plus points of the film are rare genre (satire on god and blind believes), Pawan Kalyan and Venkatesh. The weak points are not-so-arresting screenplay and prolonged climax. I have seen the original Oh My God. The original is more authentic. The remade version is more of a sugar-coated one. It’s an okay film for the people who have seen the original. The success (long term run) will depend on how people who haven’t watched the original embrace it. On a whole, Gopala Gopala is a well packaged film in a different genre though I expected a better remake out of Oh My God!
