TRAI releases consultation paper on renewal of MSO registration
MIB sent a reference to TRAI earlier this year seeking its recommendations on the renewal of MSO registration since CTN Rules, 1994 don’t mention any provisions for the same.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today issued a consultation paper on the renewal of the Multi-System Operator (MSOs) registration. The consultation paper seeks comments from the stakeholders on the relevant issues about the renewal of MSO registration, including the quantum of a fee to be paid for such renewal.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) first issued the first set of new registrations to Multi System Operators (MSOs) during the DAS implementation in June 2012, which becomes due for renewal/extension in June 2022.
The Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994, however, do not mention provisions about the renewal of MSO registrations. The regulator received a reference from MIB earlier this year seeking recommendations on the issues about the MSO renewal procedure.
TRAI has allowed stakeholders to submit written comments on the consultation paper by 10th August 2022. The counter comments, if any, may be submitted by 17th August 2022.
