Guwahati 2013 In a move that could significantly improve the English language skills of tens of thousands of school students, the city saw more than 80 Principals and English language teachers of Assam and Meghalaya schools sit through an interactive session to experience advanced teaching methods and content by Encyclopaedia Britannica, a company well known for trustworthy content.
The interactive session by Maryann Vaisoha, a University of Cambridge certified language educator, helped the participants experience Encyclopaedia Britannica’s comprehensive solution for the English language.
Made up of a National Curriculum Framework 2005 curriculum-mapped text book, a literary reader, a practice book and an interactive compact disc for learners of classes I to VIII, The English Channel offers an audio compact disc and a manual to equip teachers to deliver better in class. The Merriam Webster dictionary comes as part of the Interactive CD.
To comply with CBSE mandate to each school to equip themselves with a laboratory, Encyclopaedia Britannica’s Language Lab Solution has been created using Finnish language learning company Sanako’s technology and overlaying its own content to help learners practice their class exercises to excel.
Announcing the launch of The English Channel, Mr. Sarvesh Shrivastava, managing director, Encyclopaedia Britannica South Asia said, “The researched offering from a trusted and credible source for knowledge for over 245 years, Encyclopaedia Britannica, will allow learners of Classes I to VIII to read speedily, speak fluently, listen comprehensively with a degree of mastery over language.”
“The brief to pedagogy experts and instructional designers was to bring out a product that best equips young learners to communicate effectively”, Mr Shrivastava said emphasising that this meets needs of Indians whose mother tongue is not English.
The initiative was launched by Prof. Tabu Ram Taid, himself a distinguished linguist, author, educator and administrator, as tribute to his contribution to lexicographical works like dictionary, grammar and phonology on the Mising language.**
Father George Thomas, Principal, St. Francis De Sales School, said that his school is proud to host an event that could better prepare and equip young Indians to communicate effectively in English.
