It is extremely important to have regional sports channels as region specific ads can b accomodated on it, lot of tailor made graphics/packaging/content can b made and ofcourse as u pointed out audio feed system not supported by many cable operators as well as people also (particularly elderly) do not know how to change audio

Tamil, Malyalam, Bengali, Kannada r key markets where regional chs work well. In other markets audio feed option is best suited for sports , kids, infotainment chs.

There is technology available to insert localised ads for each region on single feed like BBC World News does but it cannot work for state wise division bcoz each LCO/ DTH operators channel decoders r providing same signal to varied audience, BBC on other hand can do this by inserting it as for all India they run specific ads. You can even see Zee running such a campaign called Zee Mitra i guess where they give option to small advertisers to insert ads as per region of their choice, sports chs cannot do it as in same region there will b people from diff language background residing and advertisers will have to either chose best option or give multiple ads which again is costly or not possible due to limited slots

There was a time when ESPN-Star and Star Cricket later, alone, were sufficient for all the rights. Now they have half the rights and 3 times the number of channels.

As far as I am aware, Star Sports India channels will not be shut down yet. However, they may later pull the plug on regional language channels or may be Star Sports 2 and 3. The number of rights they have now can be easily distributed on 2 Star Sports Channels (with multi language feed) and 2 Select Channels. Also considering Disney's cut down on expenses, they may let go a few properties out if IPL, BCCI or ICC rights.
