While the family-centric daily soaps grab the lion’s share of the TV viewing audience, newer concepts with new settings and backdrops are being adopted by the Hindi general entertainment channels.

Viewers, no doubt, were treated to shows like ‘Sanjivani’, set in a hospital, and ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin’, set in a fashion house. But now, with the change in society and aspiration levels, broadcasters and producers are bringing in workplace backdrops to entertain and engage with audiences.

In recent times, the Hindi GEC genre witnessed shows like ‘Airlines’ centring the aviation industry, ‘Reporters’ presenting the world of media, ‘Gulmohar Grand’ set in the hospitality world, and ‘Dream Girl’ and ‘Madhubala’, both based on the Indian film industry.

Zee TV business head Pradeep Hejmadi says, “Historically, we have seen different worlds being represented so it’s not something new, but it gives a different world for characters to play out and producers and broadcasters a different canvas to explore.”

The rationale behind Star Plus’ ‘Airlines’ was the industry’s aspirational aspect for the youth today.

Moreover, such a backdrop also allowed for various characters as passengers keep changing, giving different kinds of characters to string stories. Star Plus also found the story to be in line with its philosophy of ‘Nayi Soch’ (new thinking).

Similarly, when Sony Entertainment Television (SET) was developing ‘Reporters’, the lead actors, Rajeev Khandelwal and Kritika Kamra, met several journalists to understand the nuances of their lives.

Sunshine Productions producer Sudhir Sharma says that before starting work on ‘Gulmohar Grand’, they stayed in two different hotels to observe the mannerisms of the hotel staff.

“We were also in touch with people who were working in hotels to understand real-life situations and to keep in check what we are showing is authentic or not. We have to be specific and authentic, but somewhere we also take creative liberty as we are not making a documentary.”

A lot of research goes into understanding the workings of various industries, compared to earlier times when the protagonist would just be shown either going to office or sitting in a cabin and working. The focus was never on the work being done by the protagonist.
