Ya it's true. But if BCCI is expecting ipl rights at 5B . Then they believe their will be stiff competition till there. So there is chance for other companies to take the rightHere many are assuming that viacom, zee-sony will get IPL rights for nect 5 yr cycle whose price will be in between 4-5 bn USD
Tbh by seeing such high price i really dont think any indian broadcaster will be able to withstand such high price other than star when their own whole market value is very less than IPL price (then no matter what who is backing whom whether its ambani or sony-zee merger)
Star india's market value in 2016 was 14-15 bn USD right now their market value must be in betn 20-25 bn USD so iam sure they are the only one who will be able to withstand such high expenses of IPL
Do u think its joke to handle such high expenses of IPL when right now no.1 broadcaster star is also facing trouble to handle IPL when its current price is 2.55 bn USD so just imagine when IPL's price will shoot up to 5 bn dollars others like sony-zee , viacom will go bankrupt by just handling IPL (i agree sony handled IPL very well in first 10yrs bcz at that time their orice was not high but this tym if they gets IPL rights they will surely fail)
Star will surely not let go IPL as they are not buying any other sports properties rights except IPL/BCCI/ICC as their main focus is on only these 3 properties so they are just saving money to get this rights at any cost otherwise they wouldnt have launched so many sports channels
My gut feeling says that Star will surely get IPL's rights for next 5yr cycle
