MIB issues 3 TV channel licences in Jan, Star gets nod to launch Star Suvarna HD

Star India subsidiary Asianet Communications has got the approval of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) to launch the high-definition (HD) version of its Kannada GEC Star Suvarna.

Asianet Communications is now licenced to launch Star Suvarna HD. Star Suvarna, earlier known as Suvarna, was recently rebranded.

Star has been on a spree to launch HD channels, particularly in the regional space. It is gearing up to launch HD version of its Telugu movie channel Maa Movies. Priced at Rs 25 on reference interconnect offer (RIO), the new channel will mirror Maa Movies SD.

Last year, Star had launched six regional HD channels back to back. These include Bengali channels Star Jalsha HD and Jalsha Movies HD, Tamil channel Vijay HD, Telugu channel Maa HD and Marathi channel Star Pravah HD. Its first regional HD channel was Asianet HD. All these channels are priced at Rs 25 on RIO basis.

Currently, Star India owns and operates 26 HD channels across genres like GEC, sports, regional and English entertainment. It is also planning to launch a premium HD movie channel Star Gold Select HD.

Besides Star Suvarna HD, the MIB granted two more TV channel licences in January. VRL Media has been granted licence to launch Dighvijay TV while Parshavnath Medias has been got the nod to launch Jai Paras TV.

While Star Suvarna HD and Jai Paras TV are non-news uplinking licences, Dighvijay TV is a news uplinking licence in multiple languages.

The total number of private satellite TV channels having valid permission in India stands at 889. This includes 392 news and current affairs channels and 497 non-news and current affairs channels.
