They could use the money to actually provide some good content which attracts more audience. Or expand in other markets. One broadcaster doesn't need 8 Hindi movies channels.

IMO they need many channels to accomodate all films present in their library. Star/disney hindi movie chs r hugely successful bcoz their content and pricing strategy is excellent. Also the new segmented chs will have distinct appeal , these will have romance and action films while Star Gold and Star Gold 2 will primarily air mix of films. Star/disney has less repetition or overlapping and brings to viewers diverse set of films which keeps on expanding every few months

Times are changing fastly. People have less time to watch tv.
So only sports, News and some Hindi GEC channel will exist and others will be shutdown one after another. Who will wait to watch show/movies at a particular time when it is available any time over internet.

So it is a foolish decision to launch so many channels and then closing it.

It is not a foolish decision. Linear TV has vast audience in India, internet has various limitations. Only niche chs tend to have been more impacted by OTT, mass tv channels r still running successfully. About time spent on watching tv, it has gone up significantly in last few years

Star India seems to be living in a parallel world. They are not aware of any changes taking place outside. (I actually laugh when I see their business strategies). Disney, NBC and Viacom they are growing digital subscription platforms by minimizing the number of linear channels. Sports do not need to have channels in so many languages when it comes to digital platforms. But only Indian broadcasters like Star India focus on the linear TV business. Needless to say, movie channels are absolutely stupid in today's internet age !!!

Discussed this many times that plz don't compare US or Foreign Country TV or Digiatl/OTT Landscape with India. There is huge difference and both need vastly diff approach. Star/disney is just doing what is right thing to do for running business in India

Hotstar is a leading OTT platform but plz remember it is far from what kind of reach their sister tv chs have. You might b able to watch sports or movies on OTT but most cannot bcoz of various reasons. The day India becomes equivalent of foreign countries in terms of purchasing power of people and digital infrastructure then here too broadcasters will shift from TV to OTT mode

btw, end of an era... Star world was one of the earliest channels In India !! Still remember crystal maze used to air in the 90s.

No updates about it.. I think star sports select, First channels will go off air soon

Yes, they need to skip youth, music and most importantly an important channel made for infants for crying out loud. In America there are channels meant to cater to dogs. In this country we got Star catering to majority only. No risk taking at all. And hoping for 8 movie channels is both stupid and selfish. No matter how big one's library is. There is too much repitition. Killing the value of these movies.
