IRVINE, Calif., July 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its BCM7252 high-efficiency video codec (HEVC) H.265 system-on-chip (SoC) will power Tata Sky's first generation Ultra HD set-top boxes (STBs). Tata Sky, a leading Direct-to-Home (DTH) provider in India, and Technicolor, a worldwide technology leader in the media and entertainment sector, have teamed to design and deploy the region's first 4K STBs, planned for mass deployment throughout India in 2015. Broadcom's industry-leading HEVC-enabled chipsets provide the compression and higher throughput required by operators and OEMs to rapidly introduce Ultra HD subscriber hardware and content. For more news, visit Broadcom's Newsroom.

Ultra HD deployments hinge on the advanced delivery mechanisms for over-the-air broadcasts, pay TV and over-the-top (OTT) services. Unlike HD, which typically relies on MPEG-4 to compress content, Ultra HD craves a higher-efficiency video codec to support transmission. The Broadcom® BCM7252 Ultra HD SoC dramatically improves coding efficiency and reduces video bandwidth usage by 50 percent.

"We are committed to delivering an innovative and world class TV viewing experience. With the arrival of HEVC technology, our subscribers will soon be some of the first in the region to experience the live-action quality that only Ultra HD can provide," said Harit Nagpal, Tata Sky Managing Director & CEO. "As Ultra HD TVs continue to become more affordable and Ultra HD content becomes more widely available, we anticipate increased subscriber demand for Ultra HD-capable set top boxes."

Technicolor is at the forefront of Ultra HD, working to enhance the Ultra HD experience on all screens by providing content preparation and 4K image certification for high quality STBs and Video Gateways," said Georges Laplanche, Technicolor Senior Vice President APAC, Connected Home Division. "By leveraging Broadcom's advanced Ultra HD devices with integrated HEVC compression technology, we can deliver 4K resolution at a frame rate of 60 frames-per-second while substantially reducing the bandwidth required for video transmission, and providing the advanced features and capabilities needed to enable the ultimate home viewing experience."

"As consumer interest in Ultra HD continues to grow, Broadcom is delivering advanced devices with market-specific features and price points that allow consumers to enjoy an enhanced viewing experience regardless of their geography," said Rich Nelson, Broadcom Senior Vice President of Marketing, BCG. "Broadcom continues to demonstrate its commitment to furthering the Ultra HD ecosystem across the globe, providing the innovation required by our customers to drive this technology quickly into the market, particularly as lower-cost Ultra HD TVs drive consumer awareness."

Key Features of the BCM7252 Ultra HD SoC

High-performance dual-core Brahma15 10000 DMIPs ARMv7 processors
2180p60 or dual 1080p60 decode and transcode capabilities
Integrated connectivity peripherals including USB 3.0, PCIe, Gigabit Ethernet and MoCA 2.0
Highest level of platform security, content protection and DRM robustness
Dual display allowing presentation of two simultaneous video channels from the same STB via independent HDMI outputs and remote control devices
Dedicated interfaces to a range of Broadcom companion front end cable, DOCSIS, satellite and 802.11ac Wi-Fi devices
Availability
Broadcom's full portfolio of Ultra HD devices are now available. Tata Sky's Ultra HD STBs, produced by Technicolor, are slated for deployment throughout India in the first half of 2015.

MUMBAI: Direct to home (DTH) operator Videocon d2h has joined hands with MStar Semiconductor, wherein the latter will provide its high efficiency video codec (HEVC) H.265 system-on-chip (SoC) to the former's HD set top boxes (STBs).
MStar Semiconductor, which is a semiconductor company for TV, STB, display and digital home solutions, has successfully implemented HEVC technology in the HD solution, which fits properly to save the bandwidth requirement with high definition picture quality. The operators and STB OEMs can reduce their development costs and time to market to meet the Indian market demands with the MStar HEVC-capable set-top box SoC solution.
Videocon d2h director Saurabh Dhoot said, “The HEVC technology ensures that our consumers get the most advanced and evolved TV viewing experience. Videocon d2h has taken the lead in bringing this latest technology to India and we are committed to using high end technology. Innovation has been the driving force for Videocon d2h, and the HEVC technology is perfectly positioned to further improve our bandwidth usage and enable us to add more HD channels.”
“HEVC technology will greatly benefit the DTH operators in India due to the saving of bandwidth. With the coming of HEVC technology, our subscribers will experience high-efficiency Asli HD picture quality for the first time in India. This is possible through the unique video compression technology present in the HEVC capable set top boxes that is the latest in the field, and is a major improvement over the existing ones. We are committed to delivering a world class viewing experience,” added Videocon d2h CEO Anil Khera.
“It is our honour and pleasure to be a partner with Videocon d2h. As high-quality programme deployment becomes more widely demanded, we anticipate increased market demand for HEVC-capable set-top-boxes which allows more effective usage of the limited bandwidth. Leveraging our HEVC-capable set-top box platform, we will continue to provide the timely HEVC solution to Videocon d2h in order to fulfill their business goal,” said MStar Semiconductor chairman Wayne Liang

Harmonic (NASDAQ: HLIT), the worldwide leader in video delivery infrastructure, today announced that Airtel Digital TV, the direct-to-home (DTH) arm of leading global telecommunications provider Bharti Airtel, has deployed a state-of-the-art compression headend solution from Harmonic to substantially improve the HD viewing experience for its customers.

The high-density, scalable and HEVC-upgradeable video infrastructure solutions from Harmonic will help Airtel Digital TV increase bandwidth efficiencies and significantly improve video quality while lowering operating expenses. The deployment enables Airtel Digital TV to expand its DTH HD portfolio to over 50 premium channels, making it one of the largest HD bouquets in India today.

“Harmonic’s compression solution allows Airtel Digital TV to deliver superior video quality at low bit rates while adapting to next-generation video compression standards such as HEVC,” said Dan Taylor, general manager, India, at Harmonic. “Our best-in-class video infrastructure solutions help customers like Airtel Digital TV reduce OPEX and drive new business growth by simplifying the launch of additional HD channels.”

Residing at the heart of the headend solution is Harmonic’s market-leading Electra™ X2 advanced media processor, which enables high-quality, low-bandwidth MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 encoding of SD and HD video content for live DTH services. Powered by the Harmonic PURE Compression Engine™, the Electra X2 media processors support a wide range of video formats and codecs for satellite delivery, including HEVC, simplifying operations and future upgrades for Bharti Airtel.

At Airtel Digital TV, the Electra X2 media processors will be integrated with Harmonic’s ProStream® 9100 stream processor and ProView™ 7100 integrated receiver-decoder (IRD), and controlled by Harmonic’s NMX™ video network management solution. As part of a unified headend, these solutions will enable Airtel Digital TV to address a vast array of content reception applications — from decoding, descrambling and multiplexing of multiple transport streams to MPEG-4 to MPEG-2 transcoding and statistical multiplexing, further increasing bandwidth efficiency and lowering the total cost of ownership.
