Boquet
Ala carte of tamil channels
For hd
Let's take first bouquet for now.
As per new rule, any channel with MRP above Rs.12 cannot be included in a broadcaster bouquet.
Ignoring that, the Ala-carte sum of the channels in above bouquet is 69.
As per new rule, the bouquet price should not be below 46.
So some changes will be required to retain the bouquet.
First bring down the Ala-carte price of SUN TV andd KTV to Rs. 12.
Then the Ala-carte sum will become 55 and bouquet can be priced at 36.6
The bouquet subscriber will get a benefit of 3.4 rupees.
Ala-carte sum is 82, possible minimum bouquet price is 54.
The pack is already priced above the ceiling.
If 19 becomes 12, Ala-carte sum is 61, minimum bouquet price is 40.7.
SUN can price the bouquet anywhere between 40.7 and 61.
Let's take the example of Sun Tamil basic HD bouquet which costs Rs. 70 today.
It has Sun TV, K TV, and Sun Music HD channels at 19 each. The rest of the channels are priced at 9,6,1,9.
Scenario 1:
If they decide to keep the premium channels at ₹19 only, those 3 channels would individually cost ₹57 and the bouquet can only have the other 4 channels. The total of those 4 channels is 9+6+1+9=₹25. To satisfy the new rules, if Sun makes a bouquet with these 4 channels, the price can be not lower than ₹16.75. So let's assume they keep it ₹17.
The final price of those 7 channels now come to 19+19+19+17=₹74, which is ₹4 costlier than the current price.
But given the fact that Sun network, even now gives only a 14% discount on this bouquet right now and they decide to continue the same discount, they can even keep the bouquet price at 22 making the effective cost of the 7 channels 19+19+19+22=₹79, which is ₹9 costlier than the current price.
Scenario 2:
It might be unlikely that Sun will keep all three channels at 19, they might reduce KTV and Sun Music to ₹12 and keep only Sun TV at ₹19. In that case, the bouquet will have 6 channels costing ₹49 individually. The bouquet price can't be lower than ₹34. So, If Sun keeps the bouquet price at 34, for the 7 channels, it would cost 34+19=₹53, resulting in a saving of ₹17.
Like in Scenario 1, if Sun decides to continue the current discount of 14% only, the bouquet can even cost ₹43. So, for the 7 channels, it would cost 43+19=₹62, resulting in a saving of ₹8.
Scenario 3:
They could keep only Sun TV HD at ₹20 and alter the al-a-carte prices of the other 6 channels as below.
12+12+11+11+9+5, which brings the total al-a-carte cost excluding Sun TV to ₹58. The bouquet price can't be lower than ₹39. If Sun keeps the bouquet price at 39, for the 7 channels it would cost 39+20=₹59, resulting in a saving of ₹11.
Like in the previous two scenarios, Sun can continue to keep the current discount of 14%, and the bouquet can cost ₹50, making the total cost of the 7 channels ₹70, which is the same price as now and results in no savings.
Sun network is actually having the lowest discounts on bouquets, even now. So they might have the least impact due to the amendments followed by Sony and Star. Zee would have the highest impact, as they have their bouquets in a most irrational manner with 1 high-value channel and the rest low-value channels in most of their bouquets. Let's see what unfolds in the coming days!
