Let me be the first one to share:
In this interview here
Source
, RS Sharma, Chairman, TRAI says that the NCF is like rental charges.
Yes. I agree with him. We pay rental charges for our electric connection, mobile connection and many other service we enjoy today. Without the NCF, how do you expect your Cable Company to provide the service you are enjoying today? From which source will they lay and maintain cables, fibers, amplifier and many other costly equipments through which you are enjoying your TV currently? Especially for a number of LCO's they are running Local Channels and producing Local News. These also requires a substiantial amount of recurring expenditure as it requires extra manpower, apart from techicians/engineers already employed by your service providers. Without the NCF, from which source are they going to pay the salaries of their employees? For DTH service providers, the rental of even one satellite transponder is extremely high apart from many other investments required to serve you.
Many are suggesting an NCF of ₹ 0, ₹ 10, ₹ 20, ₹ 50, etc. And we already see that DTH providers are waving or discounting the NCF. It may work for player who have lakhs and lakhs of subsribers. But there are many LCO's with a few thousand subsribers or even less. I feel it's extremely important for them to charge the full NCF for them to survive now.
So what's the real reason of higher gross subcription fee now?
For me, I put the blame on the broadcasters. They have priced almost all of ther premium channels at the max rate of ₹ 19 when subcribed individually whereas they are priced much much less when taken as a bouquet or pack, bundled with many other non popular channels. This defeats the very purpose of TRAI's New Tariff/Television Regime/Order/Framework (whaterver) where TRAI envision that a subscriber can do away with those channels which they don't want to watch and pay for only what they want to watch. This should also bring down the total subscription fee. However the outcome seem to have the opposite as broadcasters started to bundle large number of channels, even charging for channels which were previously free, and forcing them on to consumers saying they offers better ROI. In the above interview, TRAI's Chairman compared this to going to a store to buy a soap, but the shopkeeper forcing you to buy a bundle consisting of the soap you want with other goods which you initially don't plan on purchancing. Well I won't go further as to why broadcasters bundles. Will leave it for others to discuss.
