Discussion General Discussions, News & Updates On Indian TV Channels

Perks of airing shows with almost no promotion. How about use Nat Geo channels to promote English GECs? It works other way too. Meanwhile we have different sets of audience of Star World and Star World Premiere HD. I recall watching shows of ABC like The Goldbergs and This is Us air on Star World Premiere HD which earlier were on Star World and should've been there. While HBO and FX's shows belongs to the niche channel who was successful as a Premium GEC with shows airing as same day as US.
To be fair they had advertised.. Atleast I had seen multiple ads on Star Movies and other English portfolios. They even tried them binged block, I don't remember the block's name exactly, it will are the show on Saturday and Sunday's primetime continuously.. They even had aired Mrs. America just after it's run on Hotstar..

Anyhow, I do fee that's its not promotion fault, but the most viewers who care about those shows might have already had watched them on Hotstar and might not have given importance to watch on the linear channels with ads and censorship...

However, they do own Universal TV and ABC Studios's shows for linear broadcasting which aren't streamed anywhere in India along with US like the Blacklist, Black-ish, the walking dead and other shows.they should have utilisied those properly with a prime time block on weekdays...

Binge block was called Weekend Binge. It was introduced in the year 2015. It was very popular back than as most didn't HD sets and connections. I recall binging last seasons of shows like Two and a Half Men and Glee. While we were introduced to new series like Crazy Ex Girlfriend, The Odd Couple etc.

Don't blame censorship. How come Colors and Zee excels in same genre? They know what content to pick for a conservative content. Family dramas, reality shows and superheroes shows works brilliantly here. Not every show has cussing and n*d*ty.

I agree. It's so sad a show like The Walking Dead is not popular in our country. If they had experimented with fresh sitcoms couple of years back. Viewers wouldn't have moved to Zee and Comedy Central.

About the promotion bro. Till date I have never seen any ad of Star World except of MasterChef ads which aired on Star Movies.

For English GECs promotion is everything, period. The Middle currently is one of the most popular English show in the country aired on Zee Cafe (along with US) and had a re-run on Romedy Now. It only grew famous in Comedy Central. Meanwhile Comedy Central needs to add some 90s sitcoms like The 70s shows, Seinfeld etc. to enhance rgeir line-up. 2000s sitcoms are way overused on all English GECs.

It depends on the library they own.. Star World's TV14 content comes from 20th TV and ABC Studios's shows which are on broadcast networks.

They particularly own a slew on new TVMA content which are produced by cable channels like FX, USA network, or FXX and mainly HBO. Almost all of these shows are to be censored before broadcast. Just take a example of Succession, it's a dysfunctional family drama it has so much cussing and it's justified to have that. And that will drive viewers away from those shows on TV..

And you have mentioned that CI is doing wonders, yes I agree that's because their library is filled with TV14 content which are produced for broadcasting networks namely the CW. And other reason is they broadcast the shows after the American broadcast but Star World isn't doing that to divert users towards Hotstar.

Most of the popular 20th TV/ abc owned TV14 Shows like 911, this is us, the resident, Modern Family, Black-ish, agents of shield all were on Star World or SW premiere continously and hadn't had because they were most probably watched by the users already on Hotstar....

They had aired many FX & HBO shows on Star World itself during the lockdown. None of them got any traction it seems. That's why they had gone back to airing Sitcoms and KWF all day now.....

They have excellent opportunities to broadcast shows which aren't streamed along with us in India...
No HBO Shows are last aired on 2019

True. They tried to air various shows but sadly did not work. Problem is not that they cannot air latest shows along with US but this comes at high cost and currently viewership, subscription / ad revenue does not support this

Whatever! They wasted so much money on one content. Yet, their offerings are suffering as simple as that. One or two content doesn't bring money to channels. It's entire offering. Do you think GECs and Movies will acquire one content by paying thousands of crores than fill rest of the slots with repeats? That's a doom business model from start.

Before 2013, Star itself. They had diverse content. I don't recall them facing any losses. Than they took International football to premium HD channels.

If there are no takers. Do you think organisers would charge more for the events? Sony is doing fine. I don't recall loss from any content as customers here are most likely to buy seperate bouquets to get all sports channels bringing a seperate subscription revenue while Star has bundled sports channels with every other bouquets. They know no cricket = no subscribers.

Ur comparison is wrong. In movie genre investing too much on few popular films and repeating it won't work plus this usually won't happen as rights r not that overpriced while in case of sports genre india cricket rights come at extremely high cost but offers many diff matches to watch. Hence both cases r different

Regarding profits or loss and how maths works in various scenarios, i have already explained in detail. Star/disney offering sports channels in only regular bouquet is a business decision, even if it was offered as separate sports bouquet they will earn well but combining just adds more to it

They used to promote English GEC heavily across channels, just lately this has reduced. Problem is that established audience for english shows has moved to OTT while trying to capture emerging audience is tough ask as ad rates and subscription cost is less but content comes at relatively high pricing. Premium brands shy away from advertising as affluent audience shifted to OTT while regular brands do not offer more money as emerging audience is largely from smaller, mid size towns or villages. It is complex and not a easy business to venture into anymore

I must also add Star's English GEC airing strategy is completely flawled. Not that they lack good or new content. They don't promote or know how to air.

Disney International HD is treated as a kids channel since Star got owned by Disney. Fresh content is airing at 11 am which has to be a joke. No one except for kids watches tv at 11 am. It is an English GEC. Wouldn't expect much from them when most of their Sports channel are treated as saas bahu channels. With one of the shows name being Virat from Heart. 😂

Star World which should be a family channel with balanced sitcoms and family dramas. Airs talk shows which only Star's seems to enjoy. Jimmy Kimmel was doing fine. Somehow similar talk shows are working fine on Comedy Central and Zee Cafe. Star World does nothing good for it's American counterparts while Viacom's made NBC's shows famous in the country.

Star World Premiere HD which use to be worthy of it's name Premiere had lost it's charm. This channel would be still popular if they had atleast a weekend life of fresh shows. You call a channel Premiere than also keep it premium HD. Than air re-runs if 1980s here.

Disney International HD primarily caters to teen or younger audience and they schedule content accordingly. It is clubbed under English GEC but has younger audience base

Star World tried a lot last year to infuse new energy in it but sadly audience response was dampening. Comedy Central or Zee Cafe r also not performing well if u look at number of ads there, just that a stronger financial backing from parent company can somehow sustain a channel but it cannot b called successful on financial front. Disney/star has made so many shows popular in India be it on tv or ott so not right to say that they have not done anything great. U know world over broadcasters r switching off tv chs and making OTT the go to destination, this trend catching up in niche channel space in India

SWP HD doing fab job in current situation, it does air many latest shows and other popular content. U should instead b appreciative in this case understanding dynamics of operating English GEC presently n market like India
