“We can participate in the IPL tender on our own. We have a very healthy balance sheet with zero debt. Certainly, we have the qualification to participate in the tender,” ZEEL MD and CEO Punit Goenka said during the company’s Q4 earnings call.

Looks like this was last year of Star as IPL broadcasters...

Will they let it go so easily though? They invested way too much into this. Won't their regional sports channels be useless without IPL. Having those channels just for bilaterals and ICC events (which also expires next year) will be too expensive

Sony , zee in tight spot as their hindi gec, hindi movie, infotainment/lifestyle, english movie chs (barring few) ain't seem to b doing that well. Also they r losing bollywood, hollywood and even dubbed hollywood films to disney/star. If they bid aggressively and win IPL rights then maybe investment for other things will suffer and vice versa. Already the financial results announced by zee or dish tv are not looking good.

Viacom18 will make all possible efforts to get rights of maximum prominent cricket rights be it IPL, ICC or BCCI. They have good financial resources , recently they have entered sports channels business and will try to make these channels popular among people for which cricket will b key driver. They may also b fine if initially losses r incurred in building the sports business . Later on they have various avenues to promote, market and monetise the sports properties acquired

Star/disney will try best to retain the key cricket rights but i will b happy if they r less burdened with cricket investments as then Disney will surely try to bring back magic of ESPN by bring various sports on their channels. Also star/disney is performing extremely well across various other genres be it on linear TV medium or on OTT, they can further scale up efforts to gain viewers / subscribers on both these platforms. Overall i think they can do extremely well even with having just BCCI rights
