‘Space Dandy’ Season 2 Premiere: Toonami Will Air More Goofy Episodes This Summer​

The "Space Dandy" season 2 premiere is, like, not even far away! The second season of the generally hilarious space anime is due out in July, which is a shocking and impressive less than six months since the first season hit U.S. shores. Thanks, Toonami! Between this and "Attack on Titan," you're really crushing it right now.

"Space Dandy" season 1 is a relative newcomer to the anime scene: the first season only premiered back in January this year, also on Toonami. And, unlike fellow anime hit "Attack on Titan," it's not on Netflix in subtitled or any other form, so it's not quite as accessible to those restricted to digital formats. No matter: the show has managed to get quite a fanbase regardless, thanks to its whimsical, goofy look at space travel.

Thankfully, the adventures of Space Dandy, QT and Meow are by no means at an end. The series is officially coming back for a second season, airing in July. Weirdly enough, this show is actually broadcast at the same time in Japan as in North America, rather than waiting several months to come over here. According to Funimation, that's the first time this has ever happened. In fact, it even airs in English in Japan, in addition to Japanese.

That's because "Space Dandy" isn't your traditional anime, clearly. For starters, it's directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, who is most famous in this country for creating "Cowboy Bebop," which I would argue is the most popular or at least most well-known serious anime in this country (i.e. not Pokémon). Watanabe's involvement alone makes the show a serious draw for your typical American fan, with interest in but not too much exposure to anime.

And "Space Dandy" season 2, like season 1 before it, is the perfect introduction to anime. It's such a perfectly goofy entry point, being a show with very little continuity, and tons of bright, beautiful visuals, clever designs, off-the-wall plots, and general nonsense. Even for hardcore anime fans, the show's sheer buoyancy makes it a pretty compelling watch. It's definitely worth watching season 1, which has already aired: you'll know very quickly if you like it or not. You probably know from the title... after all, it's about a space dandy.
