MUMBAI: India had 187 pay channels as on
30 September 2014, according to the
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
(TRAI). During the quarter ended September
2014, the rate of Raj Musix Kannada
channel was taken on record.

As per the Ministry of Information &
Broadcasting (MIB), the total number of
permitted private satellite TV channels, as
on 31 December 2014, stood at 826,
including 405 news and current affairs
channels, and 421 non-news and current
affairs channels.

As on 5 January, the MIB had granted
permanent registrations to 142 multi-
system operators (MSOs).

According to the TRAI, the maximum number
of TV channels being carried by any
reporting MSO in non- CAS areas is 400,
whereas in conventional analogue form, the
maximum number of channels being carried
by any reporting MSO is 100.

The maximum numbers of free-to-air, pay
channels and local channels reportedly being
carried by any of the reporting MSO in their
cable networks in n-CAS areas are 185, 194
and 21 respectively in the quarter ended
September 2014.

However, these numbers relate to different
networks and hence cannot be added for
arriving at the maximum number of channels
being carried in any network, the regulator
said.
