I brought an airtel spare stb from one my friends for trial and below are my observations.
1. HD picture quality looks crisper and sharper than Tata Play.
2. SD picture quality looks better in most of the Hindi movie channels I reviewed but not better in the Odia SD channels. I felt TP was better in Odia channels.
3. Audio is okay but I felt audio was much better in TP.
4. I loved the channel organisation in TP and specifically the +1 channels which is not available in airtel.
5. I get sound in star Bharat hd channel with Dolby digital plus setting which I don’t get in Tata Play with the same setting.
6. Airtel logo is really irritating.

As of now it’s okay using airtel but in future if TP add channels, then will definitely switch back.

Bro, in airtel I can choose 2 favourite audio language, thats mean 1st choice, then 2nd choice, then defult language of the the channel. But is it available in tata play?

You can select only one favourite audio..if the channel has multiple audio, fav audio set will be used....anyway switching between fav for a channel is not difficult
Most important tataplay has dedicated lcn for fav which is Missing in airtel and more importantly for me, mtv beats HD the only hd music channel is missing in airtel!

Does Tata Play even have any customer service? From the last 15 months I have been trying to figure out whether there is anyone who can help and not managed. My wife and I are senior citizens and a bit slow in understanding these things, but then shouldn't customer service include types like us. Our line does not work for around one third of the month and we get some silly message that weather conditions are bad, when everything seems to be quite fine around us. And we are charged for all the days these weather conditions are supposedly bad. I went through the replies in this discussion and a whole lot of it seemed to be on incomprehensible stuff with a heavy stress of the relative brand value of Tata versus Airtel. The views seemed to be by guys who could be on the pay of the provider. As for me I long for the good old cable tv days! My local cable tv wallah was a hundred times more accessible and available. Maybe less tech is often better than this this sort of technology for types like me. I reached here for some enlightenment whether I should shift from Tata Play to Airtel - I've been left suitably confused. Perhaps I should better search for a cable wallah alternative.

For the no signal issue, have you checked you dish antenna for any possible obstruction? Because if the signal comes and goes then maybe something is creating obstruction with wind. Also, check the condition of the LNB.

Best is subjective, it depends on what an individual prefers. If you are already Tata Play customer then no need to read these discussions because you have first hand experience and you didn't liked it, Airtel won't be much different either, so go ahead and give cable TV a try.

Sir I would also suggest cable TV . As for your issues , I suggest calling a Tata Sky technician and check with them regarding the issues. Yes with the technology maturing it should be friendly to all and the IVR options are too heavy stretching upto 9-10 options and going deep into 3-4 levels. I completely agree with you regarding the convenience which is thrown out of the window by these companies. I faced these kind of issues , when the talk to customer care option comes after 3-4 levels and many find this inconvenient. The other options too like logging into website, putting it on social media , writing email too , it becomes difficult for many and they tend to avoid these options.

As I have used both I can honestly say PQ and AQ of airtel dth is way ahead when compared to other DTH platforms. In terms of offers and few features TP is slightly better.

TRAI should establish specific regulations to ensure consistent audio and video quality across DTH services. Currently, picture and sound quality vary between providers, yet all charge customers similar rates. This issue deserves TRAI's attention.

Naa d2h picture quality is the best in both hd and sd but problem is lack of availability of all channels

HD : D2h =Airtel > DishTV > tataplay
SD: d2h > DishTV > tataplay > Airtel

Whether anyone agrees or not, despite highest tp in TP , they are compressing audio and video quality too much ..
One can easily see DD+ removed from almost all channels
