Using a HD STB can significantly improve the quality of SD channels. Check the poll on this thread.

The word "better" is not always quantifiable. Agree, some providers may have better quality just because they may be using some extra bits or some advanced techniques but its always worth comparing what you're losing. Upgrade to d2h HD and git it a shot! Im using it on a 42 inch LED and the picture quality of both SD and HD is great!! No issues with AQ either!!! Im using the box at 1080i @ 60Hz.
