MUMBAI: In a development that could have wider ramifications for the Indian Premier League (IPL) economics, the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) is considering bringing the cash-rich event under the ambit of events of national importance. This will mean that the broadcast rights holder of the IPL, in this case, Star India, will have to share the feeds of the event with public broadcaster Doordarshan. According to media reports, the MIB has mooted the proposal and has also asked the Sports ministry to weigh in on the matter. So far, IPL was excluded from the events of national importance as it is a club based tournament. Under the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act 2007, the MIB has listed Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, summer and Special Olympics, Paralympics, along with certain cricket, football, hockey and tennis events.

No doubt, this tells us clearly what will Star do if it was forced to share feed,

In an imagined world, if star agree to share the IPl matches, forced under a regulation, but insist that it would retain the rights for marketing and ad sales of the matches shown on DD channel too, sharing 25 per cent of the ad revenue--- again as per stated law.
This move could help Star not only increase the reach of IPL matches by at least 25 per cent, but also do some imaginative and aggressive ad sales with sponsors on digital and linear TV spaces.

So in a single world, profit in both ways for star as with DD's reach they will have more power to force advertisers to pay more.

Agree with the article but cannot say that dd will help them more as they could have telecast it on star sports first and would have got 100% ad revenue

Another thing is that MAX channel is available in lower base packs in all DTH and cable networks. but star sports is available only in sports packs. so u need to subscribe for it.
But why IPL becomes in 11th season a national important event?
