Discussion Satellite rights of Hindi movies

All of them are box office flops along with bad TRP on WTP/regular telecasting, that's why Sony always aired them on watershed hours and I don't think it will help star much

Box Office numbers cannot be right barometer to judge whether a film is good or bad. Many times good films sink at box office while bad ones perform well in theatres

There aren’t that many Disney+ Hotstar releases this year other than A Thursday and Kaun Pravin Tambe. All others are from YRF only which haven’t been performing very well at the box office. Observe that of all the films that release on Prime (except YRF ones) and Netflix, none of their satellite rights are with Star Gold. I think that since Star has been very successful from airing existing Bollywood films across multiple channels much better than Zee, Sony and Viacom18, it has been a little complacent in acquiring new films.

On the other hand, there was this thread a few months ago: Breaking - Sony Max converting into Bollywood Content driven channel from tomorrow but the very next day Sony Max reverted to mostly a South-focused schedule, and it has remained that ever since, as it has been for five years now. And yet Sony Max is continuously getting the satellite rights of movies such as Hit: The First Case and Ek Villain Returns, and premiering Looop Lapeta, Jalsa and the like. I really hope that all these new movies will get due airtime after the merger with Zee is completed, and if it doesn’t launch a new channel, it needs to start library sharing with Zee Cinema/&pictures on an accelerated basis instead of only a handful of movies.

True, star/disney has had fewer bollywood movie premieres in last few months and same wil continue for some more time. Though they have lost certain banners but they have constantly acquired older bollywood films which have proved immensely successful for their hindi movie channels, also they have renewed agreement with YRF, BR Chopra Films, Vishesh Films, Balaji Motion Pictures and many more banners likely to join soon. So they will continue to air good mix of old and new bollywood movies, i still feel it is better to not invest too much in acquiring new bollywood films as they are not having much repeat value which films from 80s, 90s, 2000s and early 2010s have. Broadcasters should have agreement with banners / producers / actors so that there is constant line up of new bollywood movie premieres thru years but rights should not be bought at extremely high prices except maybe for select bollywood films which truly deserve it.

Sony Max and Wah have improved bollywood content across its channels. Right now they have less number of popular bollywood films to air bcoz many have moved out and still lot more will shift to other broadcasters soon. Sony seems to repeating goldmines bollywood and dubbed south indian movies regularly since last 5 months and same will go on as all these will shift to Goldmines , Goldmines Bollywood TV channels soon. In this period we will somedays see lot many bollywood films airing on Sony Max and Wah while on other days their schedule will largely b filled with dubbed south indian movies.

As Sony starts getting more bollywood films (both old and new) onboard and goldmines library shifts from their channels then they will revamp content strategy for Sony Max and Sony Wah. Having said so I m a bit disappointed that they could still air many bollywood movies be it from VVC, YRF, T Series, Vishesh Films, Eros across its channels but unfortunately these r still largely reserved to watershed hours

Irrelevant essay written by you, currently so called movies and their producers r not interested in selling those rights to Disney, the Disney who paid 2100 Cr to Johnny Deep is a famous studio, That Disney and 'Disney+hotstar' are 2 different entities

Buddy, why would any producer / banner / actor not be interested to have agreement with star/disney when they give proper space to all kind of bollywood films across its channels with very good scheduling which no other broadcaster has been able to deliver.

Agreement r signed when both broadcasters and producer/banner / actor arrive at mutually acceptable terms, star/disney may not have been able to reach a decision with various banners/actors with whom their agreement recently expired but that does not mean that producers or banners r not interested in selling movie rights to star / disney.

Zee / Sony would b paying high amount for signing agreement with various actors/ banners and it is good that they r expanding their bollywood movie library. I am hopeful that they will have a refreshed content strategy post integration of film library / merger competition and air good mix of old/new bollywood films across its channels.

Disney is parent company of star india so money is not an issue, infact disney has strong focus on Indian Market and have invested heavily on further strengthening its brands in India. They will continue to acquire good content for its channels and OTT platforms

Last year in June July Disney-Star renewed maximun YRF movies aired in star gold sd/HD and star gold 2 but this year they renewed limited movies that too single time airing in Utv movies and SUM after 1st airing those films haven't seen in any star channels yet looks like they are in silent mode after acquiring ipl for year 2023-2027 for such whopping amount. Sony-zee took perfect decision by stepping back from ipl rights now they can more focus on upcoming/renewals of bollywood films Infact zee already started renewing bollywood films from sony and Disney-Star.

IPL rights acquisition has no connection with star / disney not renewing movie agreement with NG Grandson, Ajay Devgn Films etc. Disney has lots of financial resources and can very well manage to invest required amount across its TV channels or OTT platform in India. Star/ Disney has already acquired many bollywood films thru library companies as well as banners/producers in last 2 or 3 years which it is still continuing. Regarding signing agreement with banners for new bollywood films , they already have done so with 3 or 4 banners in last one year and in coming months more such agreements will come into effect.

When i stated on numerous occasions that sony/zee needs to focus more on bollywood content particularly older ones then u and some other members replied that "bollywood movies are not that good hence Sony / zee is focusing more on dubbed south indian" which was not the right reasoning to give as already star/disney proved that by airing bollywood movies good ratings can be achieved. Now when zee is acquiring bollywood films then u r stating that star/disney is not buying rights for new bollywood films bcoz they invested heavily on IPL rights which again is a flawed argument to make bcoz they r constantly getting fresh bollywood films onboard be it old or new.... Not only that but they r buying rights of Hollywood / dubbed hollywood movies from Warner Bros, Universal Pictures too which again come at high cost. Finances is not an issue for star / disney, they will shortly have more agreements coming into effect with various producers or banners but i am quite sure they will spend money very cautiously for new bollywood films as most of these are not likely to b good or have repeat value.

Another great thing about star/disney is that constantly renew many good bollywood movies which until now were lying unsold or did not get proper airing since many years like Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Hum Hai Raahi Pyaar Ke, Dum (2003), Bhool Bhulaiya, Aflatoon, Shiva (1989), Rowdy Rathore, Xcuse Me etc.

Sony/Zee were very eager to buy IPL rights but like previous time could not match up with star/disney or viacom18 interms of placing bids. Had they won IPL rights then it would certainly have some adverse impact in investment going into acquiring movies while star/disney would have done very well without IPL rights . Already discussed this point in detail in IPL rights thread so will not repeat myself.

Sony did not have IPL rights from 2018 to 2022 but still they were quite slow in acquiring bollywood films , on the other hand star/disney acquired both TV and Digital rights of IPL for a very big amount and constantly expanded its bollywood movie library as well spent lot of money on other channels across various languages too where it has strong presence. Not only that during this period star/disney launched many new channels but Sony closed some channels. Even if draw comparison with zee then star/disney fared far better during this period.
Sony acquired TV rights for IPL for 10 years (starting 2008) for about 8000 crore and gained great profits from it as IPL drew huge ratings but still they weren't able to renew rights or invest properly in acquiring more bollywood films or even expand its channel portfolio across genres.

They acquired ipl rights for huge amount bhai 24+k crore in not issue that's OK but what about yrf movies which they are airing in utv and sum films like tashan, rnbdj, New York, bachna ae hasino, dum laga ke haisha should be aired in main channel in prime time and what about this films saathiya, hum Tum, dillagi, Darr, lamhe and other yrf classic films.

I agree on this point....
These movies should telecast in better slot and main channels along with SUM....
Classics like Lamhe,DLKH etc cn shift to SHS prime slots aftr initial airing on main channels...

Maybe respected zee network hindi movie channels head is following our forum and as we were discussing that star/disney has high possibility of renewing Tips Films library so zee right away went ahead and sealed the deal
Thanks for giving feedback to broadcasters bhai. zee has improved a lot looks like sony-zee follow ur posts and feedbacks.

21000 crore for acquiring IPL TV rights is not an issue nor they have overspend. Number of IPL matches played in forthcoming seasons likely to see major increase so i feel investment is justified and star/disney has financial resources to invest in Cricket as well as focus on other sports or others genres/channels in which they have strong presence.

Wait a little more as many other YRF movies will b renewed in the coming months / years. Also scheduling of films will b improved
