How are u inferring that sony doesnt know about the deal? If the zee sony deal is that much processed that even the stock market clearance is done then why are u hoping for it to fail. Maybe sony is bringing many sports properties on the table so as part of the agreement zee is also doing some investment. With its experience in sports broadcasting it is better only for consumers if sony zee unite.
If Sony knows everything they will not participated in ICC Media Rights auction, also 2nd highest bidding too from Sony only.

Even zee participated in the auction.
We dont know whether it was a pre planned move as some media executives are claiming or whether star realised that the bid it made was infeasible considering the second highest bid was less than half its bid. Maybe they just wanted digital rights of icc at any cost after missing out on ipl digital rights. If it is a post auction deal then star may be selling the rights at a loss, to cut down the losses considering globally disney is cutting down on the tv business and promoting digital.

Disney's overall long term strategy looks to be moving to digital streaming with linear Tv having minimal marquee events.

Disney could have rebranded Star Sports as ESPN with select international sports and all other sporting action shifting to streaming and a TV broadcast partner. If Only Disney+ Hotstar had IPL streaming rights to complete the switch...

ICC TV rights are with ZEE & DIGITAL are with STAR now.

It is very disappointing news for Tata Play app users like me, as world cup live matches can't be streamed on it in future, because of seperate broadcasters for TV & digital :(
